About ShieldNav

ShieldNav LLC is a limited liability company organized in the State of Indiana and based in the Chicagoland area. We build one product: ShieldNav, a GPS navigation app for iPhone that shows reported crime data alongside turn-by-turn directions.

Why we built it

Navigation apps are very good at answering “what is the fastest way there.” They are silent on everything else about the route. Meanwhile, most American cities publish detailed crime incident data as open records — it sits in municipal data portals, in formats that differ from city to city, effectively unreadable to anyone who is not already looking for it.

ShieldNav exists to close that gap. We take public incident records, normalize them across jurisdictions, and put them on the same map you are already using to drive. The goal is context, available before you leave rather than after you arrive.

How we approach the data

Crime data is easy to present irresponsibly, and we have made deliberate choices about not doing that.

• We show what was reported, and say so. Our map reflects incidents that were reported to and published by a municipal government. That is not the same as everything that happened, and we do not describe it as if it were.
• We do not score neighborhoods or predict crime. ShieldNav displays historical incident data. It does not rank areas, forecast risk, or make claims about the people who live in a place.
• We state our coverage limits plainly. Jurisdictions that do not publish open data do not get a crime layer, and refresh cadence varies with each city’s publishing schedule. Both facts are documented in our Crime Data Disclaimer.

How we approach your data

We are not a data broker and we do not run an advertising business. ShieldNav is funded entirely by subscriptions, which means we have no reason to sell location history and no plans to build a business that would require it. Account data, saved places, and route history are covered in detail in our Privacy Policy, including how to request access to or deletion of everything we hold.

Where things stand

ShieldNav is in active development for iOS and is not yet on the App Store. If you would like to know when it launches, join the waitlist — we will email you at release and will not use the list for anything else.
